A jury of experts chose the design from the local architects Halbritter. It features a compact form which perfectly fits into open landscape. Its large floor space of 1,300m² only gets apparent from the inside. A side-effect of the low building: although it is exposed to the local winds, energy requirements are kept low. The National Park building is an environmental technology showpiece among public buildings because of its superior insulation, large expanses of glass on the south wooden front, its 160m² of thermal collectors and a 30m² system-parallel photovoltaic power system.

Of course, the Information Centre is wheelchair accessible – there are no steps in the building.

Useful information à la carte

At the Information counter you can ask directly, select from a wide range of brochures and leaflets or use the interactive computer for queries. There are book rests around a huge map of the Neusiedler See/Seewinkel area. Wall displays illustrate the typical habitats and the salt-plants.  The visitor library houses about 1,500 books and is constantly expanded with educational material for school classes and study groups.

The building offers rooms and equipment for conferences, workshops, seminars or one-day events that are also available to the local population. The projection room seats up to 50 people and allows the projection of digital data. The conference room disposes of the same equipment and can be adapted to accommodate larger groups. This room can seat up to 200 people.

Two seminar and exhibition rooms (50m² and 70m²) complete the offer.

A catering service is at hand if needed. The National Park shop is opened daily from April until October.

The new Eco-education Centre of the Fertö Hanság Nemzeti Park in Fertöújlak (Mexikopuszta) was opened in 2007 (Hungary).

The new National Park administrative centre of the Hanság Nemzeti Park in Hungary is called Kócsagvár (egret’s castle). The 1,326m² building is characterised by the wood columns and the thatched roof. It was built according to plans of an original Petscheneg fishing village, to which the gabled houses refer to.

The Kócsagvár fulfils many tasks, like administration, research work and organisation of experts’ meetings.
